Coach Henry enters his 10th season as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Blazers. Over Coach Henry’s first 9 season he has had the privilege of coaching some great young men, who became great football players during their time at GEHS. The 2015 Defense looks to improve from last year. Many new faces will be seeing Varsity time on Friday Nights. We are expecting great things from these young men. Kris has 20 years of coaching experience and this season will be coaching the Varsity Linebackers.
Coach Henry began his coaching career in 1995 as the 7th grade Head Coach at Great Bend Middle School in Great Bend, Kansas. In 1996, Coach Henry moved to Great Bend High School as an assistant coach for the 9th grade team. From 1997 to 2000, he was the Defensive Coordinator and also coached linebackers and defensive line for the Great Bend High School Panthers. In 2001, Kris took a position as the Defensive Coordinator and linebackers’ coach at Claflin High School in Claflin, Kansas. The following year, he took over the program as Head Coach for the Claflin Wildcats. That year, in 2002, the Wildcats had a record of 12 wins and 1 loss and ended the year as the State Runner-Up in Class 2-1A. In 2003, Coach Henry accepted a position as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Larned High School in Larned, Kansas. He held that position for three years before joining Coach Diener on their move to Gardner Edgerton in 2006.
Coach Henry's coaching honors include being named the 2002 Hutchinson News All Class Football Coach of the Year. That same year he was also voted Great Bend Tribune Golden Belt All Class Football Coach of the Year. In 2003, Coach Henry had the honor of serving as an Assistant Football Coach for the Shrine Bowl West Team.
Kris began his teaching career in 1995 as an Elementary Physical Education teacher for Great Bend, Kansas, public schools. Kris later taught high school weightlifting and was employed by the Great Bend schools until 2003. From 2003 to 2006, Kris was the Athletic Director and Weightlifting Coordinator for Larned High School in Larned, Kansas. Presently, Kris is an Athletic Development instructor at Gardner-Edgerton High School.
Coach Henry grew up in the town of Prague, Oklahoma, and played for Prague High School before graduating in 1989. In 1994 Kris graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a BS in Health/Physical Education. In 2000 Coach Henry received his Masters degree from Fort Hays State University in Educational Administration.
Coach Henry was married on August 8, 1998, to Christy Henry. They have two children, a son, Tyler, who is 16 years old and a daughter, Marly, who is 13 years old. Kris' wife, Christy, is a school psychologist with the Gardner Edgerton USD 231 school district. In her spare time she enjoys reading, cooking, following Blazer athletics, and watching her childrens' activities. Tyler is a sophomore at GEHS. He enjoys playing Blazer football and baseball during the school year, and summer baseball for the KC Barnstormers. Marly is a 8th grade student at Pioneer Ridge Middle School. Marly participates in Cheerleading at PRMS and next year wants to be a GEHS Blazer cheerleader. Kris enjoys watching Tyler's teams and watching Marly cheer. In his spare time, he likes to play golf, fish, hunt waterfowl and spend time with his family.
